Ontario's universal flu shot program appears to have led to a significant decline in the number of younger adults who are hospitalized with flu-related illness, new research presented at a national immunization conference suggests.
Influenza-related hospitalizations in people aged 20 to 34 and 35 to 49 dropped 20 per cent in Ontario after the universal program was put in place, Dr. Jeff Kwong, a scientist from the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences in Toronto told the conference in Winnipeg.
Over the same time frame, influenza hospitalizations in these age groups declined by only two to three per cent in other provinces.
